We humans are affected by our environments. Things outside of us can impact our behavior. Unclean spirits affect our lives by putting thoughts, feelings, and imagery into our heads.
Here’s an example:
Let’s say you are gaining victory over a certain fear—perhaps running out of money. You will recognize when that demon is attacking you because you begin having the old familiar thoughts ‘That you will wind up destitute.’
Here’s a review of our previous coverage on Spiritual Warfare:
1.Quickly reject the lie.
2.Command the demon to leave.
3.Speak the positive.
4.Quote God’s Word over your life, declaring God will supply all your needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus.
5.Stay alert for the demon’s return.
Let’s say over time, you have great success over that particular demon. This does not mean that Satan will never try to assault you again in a moment of weakness, or that he will stop looking for another way in. Since fear has worked in the past, he uses the strategy of fear in a brand-new attack. He begins pummeling your mind with thoughts of fear of getting old and ending up in a nursing home in pain. You must recognize that a demon is speaking this new lie to you, and you must respond with the same weapons. You must take the same steps all over again, only this time find a Bible verse that fits this particular situation.
Self-Deliverance is not a magic wand. I’ve heard of people being freed of Demonic attacks completely but that has not been my personal experience and I don’t believe this is the norm. We must continue fighting to maintain our deliverance. Think of it like taking care of your car. Just because you clean it once, does not mean it will stay clean forever! Especially if you are in the habit of a messy, chaotic life.
When we find ourselves rooted in patters of thinking from the realm of darkness, there is usually a process through which we are sanctified and delivered. We must be cleansed from one degree of glory to the next. Discernment comes through maturation and the more we practice the will of God, the more discernment we have. The more discernment we have, the more we can separate light from darkness and gain victory over specific demonic thoughts that have become strongholds in our lives.
Regarding thoughts that are not from the Holy Spirit, the Bible says that there is a connection between the realm of the demonic and that part of human nature that wants to sin. We must reject all thoughts that come from our flesh as they have a basis in evil. Demons work through fallen sinful human flesh.
“Immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience…put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.” Colossians 3:5-6,8
We do not take dominion by controlling only the environment. Rather we begin to enter into freedom by controlling ourselves and ruling our own spirits. This is why we must find the foundational demon. If we can break the grip of that demon, the other demons can be loosed, too. For instance, If the demon of fear is dissipated, then there is no anger because the spirit of anger is working off the spirit of fear.
“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
I know this sounds strange, and I wouldn’t suggest doing this in public arenas, but when you discern the enemy speaking to you, for instance, if thoughts of self-reproach, condemnation, hatred or accusation towards others, say out loud:
“I reject you, Satan. Get out of my head!”
On an extreme scale, how many murders could be halted if a person who was hearing from the enemy would pause and intervene with this decree?
What does the battle in the mind sound like?
“Julia, nobody wants to be around you.”
“I reject you, Satan. Get out of my head!”
“You know what? Those people were talking about you.”
“I reject you, Satan. Get out of my head!”
“You really are a loser, Jules.”
“I reject you, Satan. Get out of my head!”
Persist and do this consistently and you will feel demonic strength weakening. Just like you cannot prevent birds from flying over your head, you can prevent them nesting there. Over time, rejecting Satan’s lies will open your life to greater peace, power and stability.
Let’s review. The next time demonic spirits try to deceive you:
-Recognize it is a demon spirit.
-Acknowledge the thought is not yours.
-Cast it down. “I reject you, Satan.”
-Replace the demonic thought with God’s word, which is truth.
God’s word is truth and power. You have the power to choose what you put your faith in. Don’t put your faith, attention and energy on a lie that will take you down.
