Your Identity in Christ, explained

January 16, 2026

When people come to salvation.  They have been transferred from the Kingdom of Darkness into God’s Kingdom of Light and Truth. It takes a while to not only adjust to our New Identity but to begin walking in.  But to begin walking in it, you must clearly define what ‘It’ is. Here is a brief biblical summary of the shifts in postions and authority.

  1. In Christ / New Creation

This is the foundation. Everything flows from union.
    • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
    • Romans 8:1 – There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
    • Ephesians 1:3 – Blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.
    • Colossians 2:9–10 – You are complete in Him.
    • Galatians 2:20 – It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.2. Child of God / Family Identity

    Not metaphorical. Legal and relational.
    • John 1:12–13 – To all who received Him… He gave the right to become children of God.
    • Romans 8:15–17 – You have received the Spirit of adoption… heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.
    • Galatians 4:6–7 – You are no longer a slave, but a son.
    • 1 John 3:1–2 – See what kind of love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God—and so we are.

    3. Righteous, Justified, Forgiven

This is where religion gets nervous—but Scripture doesn’t.
    • 2 Corinthians 5:21 – We become the righteousness of God in Him.
    • Romans 5:1 – Justified by faith, we have peace with God.
    • Romans 8:30 – Those He justified, He also glorified.
    • Colossians 1:13–14 – Redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
    • Hebrews 10:14 – By one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

    4. Chosen, Called, Secure

    Your identity isn’t fragile.
    • Ephesians 1:4–5 – Chosen in Him before the foundation of the world.
    • Romans 8:38–39 – Nothing can separate us from the love of God.
    • 2 Timothy 1:9 – Called with a holy calling—not according to our works.
    • John 10:28–29 – No one can snatch them out of My hand.

    5. Free, Redeemed, No Longer a Slave

    Sin doesn’t define you anymore.
    • Galatians 5:1 – It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.
    • Romans 6:6–7 – No longer slaves to sin.
    • Romans 8:2 – The law of the Spirit of life has set you free.
    • Colossians 2:13–15 – Canceled the record of debt… disarmed the powers.

     6. Holy, Sanctified, Set Apart

    This is status before behavior.
    • 1 Corinthians 1:30 – Christ Jesus… our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.
    • 1 Corinthians 6:11 – You were washed, sanctified, justified.
    • Hebrews 10:10 – We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
    • 1 Peter 2:9 – A chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.

    7. Seated, Empowered, Spirit-Filled

This is where authority comes from.
    • Ephesians 2:4–6 – Raised us up and seated us with Him in heavenly places.
    • Romans 8:11 – The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you.
    • 1 Corinthians 6:19 – Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
    • 2 Timothy 1:7 – Not a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and sound mind.

     8. Ambassadors & Co-Laborers

Identity leads to mission—not the other way around.
    • 2 Corinthians 5:18–20 – Ambassadors for Christ.
    • Matthew 5:14 – You are the light of the world.
    • Ephesians 2:10 – Created in Christ Jesus for good works.
    • 1 Corinthians 3:9 – God’s fellow workers.

    9. Loved, Known, Kept

This is the emotional core most people miss.
    • Romans 5:5 – God’s love poured into our hearts.
    • Ephesians 3:17–19 – To know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.
    • Psalm 139:13–16 – Fearfully and wonderfully made.
    • Jude 1:24 – Able to keep you from stumbling.

    Your identity is not:
    • your past
    • your struggle
    • your emotions
    • your performance

Your identity is: Who God says you are because of what Christ finished.
